The Legend of the Lionheart Crown

A crown that will not stay on any one head

A hundred years ago, the black dragon Vyrthrax the Undying burned the old kingdom to the stone. Its lords hid in their towers and let the villages burn. Only one man walked into the Dragon's Maw: a farmhand named Aldric, with a pitchfork and nothing left to lose.

Nobody knows what Aldric said to the dragon. He walked out alive, the dragon went to sleep, and Aldric came home with a crown hammered from the gold the beast had been sleeping on. The people made him King. On his first morning he climbed the castle steps and swore an oath that still binds the realm.

The crown remembers that oath. It slides off the head of any ruler the realm stops talking about and goes looking for whoever is doing the talked-about things: slaying beasts, finishing the impossible quests, toppling Kings. The bards call that fame renown. Everyone else calls it a target.

So in Lionsgate there are only two things you can be. The proverb is older than the castle: you are either King, or you are Skum. Everyone starts at the bottom of that sentence.

“Let no King rule forever. When a better soul comes along, let the crown leave my head and go to theirs, even if they are only a farmhand.”

The wheel of the crown

Rise. Rule. Fall. Repeat.

Every server is its own kingdom, and every kingdom is a race. Your rank is set by your renown, and your rank makes you stronger or weaker. Nobody stays on top for long.

  1. KingOne crown. Taxes every coin in the realm. Hunted by everyone.
  2. JackThe King's right hand, and first in line if the King falls.
  3. KnightSword of the court. A bounty hangs on your head.
  4. WorkerHonest blades with ambition.
  5. PeasantMud on your boots, fire in your eyes.
  6. SkumWhere every legend begins. Usually also where it ends.
I

Rise

Start with a rusty sword and a hundred gold. Hunt chickens at Sunnybrook Farm, then goblins, werewolves, raptors and storm titans. Every quest, every kill and every royal you topple earns renown. Climb the ladder fast, because one death sends you back to the bottom.

II

Rule

Earn the most renown and the crown finds you. Command the town guards, proclaim royal decrees, and watch the King's Tax pour into your coffers. The longer you reign, the higher the tax, and the angrier the realm.

III

Fall

Slay the King and you plunder his coffers and plunge Lionsgate into Anarchy: ten minutes of every soul for themselves, after which the most renowned stands crowned. Or whisper to Fennick the coin-flipper and start a civil war from inside the court.

Not everyone in Lionsgate wants to kill you. Some only want your gold. One wants to talk about the weather.

Mortimer Tithe

Stay away from the realm for more than a day and Mortimer comes round with his wheelbarrow. Your gear is the King's now. It's the law. He's very sorry. (He isn't.)

Nothing personal, friend. Just paperwork.

The Genie of the Hollow

Some say if you fall far enough out of the world, someone at the bottom grants wishes. Some say the wishes come with very small print.

Three wishes? Who told you three?

Whispered in the Crooked Dagger

The realm keeps secrets

Some are worth diamonds. Some are worth a story. None of them are on any map.

“Fall far enough and someone at the bottom will grant your wishes. Wish carefully. He keeps receipts.”

Heard near the goblin rocks

“A gentleman lives where the jungle grows tall. He has never fought a monster. He has never needed to.”

Overheard at the Tikihana trailhead

“In the far corner of the realm, something is smiling at you. Keep talking until there's nothing left to say.”

Scratched into a waystone

“The chickens of Sunnybrook remember every one of their fallen. Every hundredth, they come for you.”

Sunnybrook Farm, unofficially
The throne is empty. For now.

King or Skum?

The crown is out there looking for its next head. It doesn't care where you come from. It only cares what the realm is saying about you.
